Music of Tim Maia
Mr. Sebastião Rodrigues Maia, known to millions simply as Tim Maia, is Brazil’s definitive Soul Brother #1. Tim’s music was heavily influenced by North American Soul and R&B sounds he absorbed while studying in the USA in the early 60s.
Starting in 1968, Tim Maia recorded over 33 albums that added many essential flavors to the Brazilian musical melting pot. Constantly in search of the perfect beat and the perfect love song, Tim’s amazing musical menu includes Soul, Pop, Funk, Samba, Disco, Baião, Ballads, Psychedelia, Bossa, Rock, Jazz and all the mutations in between. Singing in both Portuguese and English, several of his songs became huge national hits reaching the heart (and feet) of Brazilians from all walks of life.
Controversial, hilarious, demanding, cult-member, irreverent and outspoken are some of the words commonly used to describe this larger then life (literally) figure in Brazilian music. Tim left us prematurely on March 15th, 1998, but his Soul and grooves will be with us forever.
