Irving Sandler and Marylyn Dintenfass, Parallel Park

In December 2011, renowned art critic Irving Sandler sat down with artist Marylyn Dintenfass at the CUE Art Foundation in New York City to discuss her newest public art installation "Parallel Park" and her most recent monograph of the same name published by Hard Press Editions.

The two discuss Dintenfass' long history as an artist, the significance of color in her work, the politics of public installation and the artist's enduring fixation with architecture and automobiles. Sandler and Dintenfass also debate the difference between public art installations and artwork produced for a gallery. Brought to life in 2010, "Parallel Park" is Marylyn Dintenfass' recreation of the five-story Lee County Justice Center Parking Garage in Fort Myers, Florida that transformed the parking garage in such a way that it has lead to a case of mistaken identity - the garage is frequently mistaken for an art museum. Her vibrant oil works, enlarged to surround the building's exterior, are the product of her obsession with the automobile and convey the movement, form and freedom the vehicle represents.
