Co-founder of the Ghetto Biennale and founding member of Atis Rezistans Andre Eugène chats with writer Dany Laferrière about the philosophy of creation Laferrière observes at work in the Grand Rue, the abundance of sculptures in the spaces representing the “delirium of creation” and the passion and obsession of the artists. In the Atis Rezistans lakou, Laferrière sees art serving as a kind of a library. He argues that people should do things they do not know how to do, in order to enter into a new learning process. He himself, he claims, doesn’t know how to write: “I write like a primitive painter.”

Haitian society, Laferrière says, is like an airplane. The elite are riding in first class, and they are informed that a bomb is about to explode back in economy. The attitude of the elite is to say, hey, it’s okay, the bomb’s not in our part of the plane!
