Dan Joseph & Andrea Williams

Brooklyn-based composer Dan Joseph performs works for electro-acoustic hammer dulcimer and field recordings with guest artist Andrea Williams. Exploring their shared interest in field recordings, acoustic ecology, and conscious listening, the two perform collaborative, improvised electroacoustic soundscapes. Their slowly developing, often quiet works which combine a variety of acoustic and electronic sounds – processed hammer dulcimer, processed field recordings, bells, harmonicas and other hand held sound makers.

The program begins with Joseph's solo performance of Dulcimer Flight, followed by the collaborative work, Dulcimer Surrealscape, by the duo.

Dan Joseph is a free-lance composer based in New York City. He began his career as a drummer in the vibrant punk scene of his native Washington, DC. During the late 1980s, he was active in the experimental tape music underground, producing ambient-industrial works for independent labels in the U.S. and abroad. He spent the ‘90s in California where he studied at CalArts and Mills College. His principal teachers include Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Curran and Mel Powell. Equally influential where his studies with Terry Riley during several workshops in California and Colorado.

Sound artist and composer Andrea Williams utilizes site-specific elements and perceptual cues to reveal the unseen connections between people and their environment. Her compositions make use of field recordings, instruments, computer technologies and the sound of the performance space itself. She has led soundwalks in New York and the Bay Area, and has shown and performed both solo and with various musicians at galleries and alternative spaces internationally.
