This performance of the composer/performer's piece shade/gradient for viola, voice, and formant/filtered oscillators was recorded at Experimental Intermedia Foundation in March 2013.

Catherine Lamb is a violist and composer who blends Western common practice traditions with structures and intonations of Hindustani classical music. Her teachers include Mani Kaul who was directly connected to Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and whose philosophical approach to sound became important to her. She studied composition at the California Institute of the Arts (2004-2006) under James Tenney and Michael Pisaro, who were also integral influences. It was at CalArts that she began her work into the area of Just Intonation, which became a clear way to investigate the interaction of tones and ever-fluctuating shades. She received her MFA from the Milton Avery School of Fine Arts at Bard College in 2012 and subsequently moved to Berlin, Germany.

RADIO SERIES

A radio series of programs recorded at Experimental Intermedia Foundation (EI), the legendary, influential downtown New York loft venue, incubator, showcase, and community center for composers and experimenters in the arts, known for being first and best at presenting (and recording!) new music and new media since the 70s. The concert series is programmed and produced by composer Phill Niblock who has been directing presentations at Experimental Intermedia since 1973 (well over 1,000 performances) and he is the curator of EI's XI Records label. In 1993, he opened a satellite space with window gallery in Ghent, Belgium. For more on the concert series, recordings, archives, and other intermedia adventures of Phill Niblock around the globe visit the Experimental Intermedia Foundation site. This radio project is a partnership between Experimental Intermedia Foundation and The Clocktower Gallery and its radio station at ARTonAIR.org.
