Season 1, Ep.6 : Ann Fraioli, Harbor School
Ann Fraioli was one of the Harbor School’s founding faculty members. The school, started in 2003, has become an exemplar of high school maritime education—and the kind of school that raises pangs of jealousy in most adults who never had the chance to learn to scuba dive or build aqua robots in high school. Fraioli, who is now a curriculum specialist, sat down on the edge of Atlantic Basin in Red Hook, just across from Governors Island, to tell us more about the Harbor School and about her experiences on the water. Her son, Theo, also joined us, and is the first toddler we have met who travels with his own personal floatation device (a life vest) at all times. CB Radio was inspired by the research, design, and development of Citizen Bridge, a temporary floating bridge to reconnect New Yorkers to their waterways. In order to learn about New York City’s waterways, Nancy Nowacek artist and project founder, engaged the expertise and advice of writers, architects, artists, industrial designers, bridge engineers, as well as the experts and enthusiasts that comprise New York City’s maritime community. From the Harbor School to the Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge, CB Radio—in collaboration with Jake Nussbaum, artist and Clocktower Radio Station Manager— will introduce listeners to the people and ideas that define New York City’s harbor.
