AASF: Geir Haraldseth, Sommerskolen

Dylan Gauthier hosts Geir Haraldseth of Sommerskolen discussing the history of the alternative school, curatorial party-packs, confetti, jokes, the curator algorithm, and getting weird.

Geir Haraldseth is a curator and critic based in Oslo, Norway. Haraldseth holds a BA in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design and an MA in Curatorial Studies from Bard College. He is currently curator at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo, a regular contributor to Kunstkritikk and Acne Paper, an editor of Landings Journal and UKS Forum, and president of the Norwegian Association of Curators. He has curated exhibitions at the National Museum of Art, Design and Architecture in Oslo, Fotogalleriet in Oslo, Akershus Kunstsenter in Lillestrøm, Vox Populi in Philadelphia, Teatro de Arena in Sao Paulo, Landings Project Space in Vestfossen, Bastard in Oslo, and Torpedo in Oslo. He is currently working on a publication featuring a selection of his own curatorial projects, to be published by Torpedo Press in Fall 2012.

Sommerskolen
Stavanger, Norway
In 2014 Rogaland Kunstsenter was awarded funding for a three year summer school program by the Norwegian Arts Council. The program is experimental in nature and creates different activities for the arts community during the summer. In its first year the school took on the form of 50 drop-in events, organized by the curatorial collective Rivet, and artists Marc Vives and Anna Craycrofft. In 2015 the summer school was organized by Courtesy the Artists and involved a queer retelling of the legend of King Arthur. 2016 saw the final edition of the summer school focusing on curatorial activities. Over the course of two weeks, the art center and its gallery will be the laboratory (90s), hub (00s) and whatever (the future!) for curatorial thought. The three iterations have had wildly different curatorial set-ups in order to develop an Independent Study Program for the region.

Rogaland Kunstsenter is a regional art center located in Stavanger, on the west-coast of Norway. The art center was founded in 1978 by the local arts and crafts communities, and serves today as a resource center for the artists, the municipalities and the county when it comes to contemporary art and its challenges.

Dylan Gauthier is an artist, curator and educator working at the intersection of new media, socially-engaged art and ecology. His artistic practice takes the form of soundtracks, images, websites, publications, environmental research, and architecture, and documents the residues of temporary occupations, invisible infrastructure, and utopian systems. Gauthier is co-founder of the artist-boatbuilder collective Mare Liberum (2007-) and of Sunview Luncheonette (2012), an art and social center located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
