Black Mountain School
Black Mountain, North Carolina, USA
Black Mountain School is an experiment in education and community. We aim to provide a participatory model of education that encourages progressive thinking, creating, and connecting. A collective approach to organization, self-directed study in DIY learning, as well as communal activities and events combine to provide all participants with the ability to openly learn from one another.
In the face of extreme tuition cost, corporatized profit-driven learning, and a “one size fits all” curriculum that define the limitations of public and private higher education, we are presenting an alternative. Black Mountain School is a socially integrated experience that features an intimate class size, emphasis on labor, and communal living. Educators create the content of study, students determine their level of engagement, and community is sustained through collective participation.
