Unionizing Babeland / Cecilia Lopez

Episode 1 of She Resonates features interviews with Lena Solow and Phoenix Casino, who helped unionize legandary sex toy store Babeland, in addition to an in-studio performance of the piece Red from sound artist Cecilia Lopez


Lena Solow
worked as a sex educator for many years before being inspired by the Babeland organizing to pursue union work. She now works as a staff representative at Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 1180. She writes the Ask a Sex Educator column at Teen Vogue.

Phoenix Casino produced award-winning sociology research on Filipinx diaspora and political identity at Brooklyn College, where they were also active in student organizing. They are now a Babeland shop steward.

Lena and Phoenix reached out to union organizers in 2015 and, together with their coworkers, helped lead the historic unionization efforts at Babeland in 2016. Babeland is the first unionized sex toy store in the country

Cecilia López is a composer, musician and installation artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her work explores the boundaries between composition and improvisation, as well as the resonance properties of diverse materials through the creation of non-conventional sound devices and systems.

She holds and M.F.A from Bard College and an M.A. in composition from Wesleyan University and has collaborated with artists Carmen Baliero, Carrie Schneider, and Lars Laumann, among others. In 2015 she was the recipient of the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship and her work has been performed at Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires in Argentina; Festival Internacional Tsonami de Buenos Aires in Argentina; Floating Points Festival at ISSUE Project Room in New York; Ostrava Days Festival in the Czech Republic; MATA Festival in New York; Experimental Intermedia in New York; Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo; and Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius.
