Zipora Fried, I Hope The Moon Explodes
New York-based artist Zipora Fried sits down with curator Tim Goossens in the Clocktower Radio studio to discuss her 2014 solo exhibition I Hope The Moon Explodes (on view through Oct.12) at On Stellar Rays on the Lower East Side.
In the exhibition Fried presents an expansive body of graphite and oil pastel drawings on both mylar and pigment prints, along with c-prints and a video, all on view together for the first time in one salon-style installation. The landscape photographs made their debut in Dark Paradise, one of the last exhibitions to take place at our historic Clocktower Building space; subsequently Fried has changed the compositions and used them as backgrounds for oil and pastel drawings.
Joining Fried and Goossens in the radio studio are Brooklyn-based bandmates Pretty Wilds, who collaborated with Fried on the soundscape of a new video entitled You Can Have Me Back: it presents found footage of Japanese and American robotic technologies with unsettling human and animalistic movement. With the volume turned up it provides a poetic albeit moody setting for the exhibition room.
Pretty Wilds are songwriter/musicians Jason Merris Bell and Jordan Rand Miller, both originating from the northwest USA. Bell toured and recorded with Stars of Track & Field and has produced and scored for film, TV, and other media. Miller was born to a family of traveling gospel singers and had early success in Europe with the band Black Apache. These days they operate out of Brooklyn.
Zipora Fried, born in Haifa, Israel, studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, and has exhibited widely across the USA, Europe, and beyond. Her work is represented a number of museum collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; The American University Museum, Washington, DC; The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; The Albertina Museum, Vienna; The Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel; Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall, Stockholm; Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, MA. Fried is also the recipient of numerous awards for her experimental films, which have been featured in festivals worldwide.
