Yojiro Takita and Masahiro Motoki, Departures

A young man makes a curious career change in Yojiro Takita’s tearful
and comic Departures, which won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Foreign
Language Film as well as ten Kinema Junpo Awards, including Best Picture
and Best Director. Takita and his leading man Masahiro Motoki discuss
the origins of the film - set around an ancient Japanese cremation preparation ritual - and how the subject of the film and the natural settings of
the ancient Japanese city in which it takes place changed the filmmaking process. In Japanese and English (28 minutes).
