Wayne Barker
Jake Nussbaum sits down with visual artist Wayne Barker in anticipation of Barker's show in the first annual 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair in New York. They discuss how art helped eradicate apartheid in South Africa, what it means to be a white African, and Wayne's recent foray into traditional glass beadworks. On view at Pioneer Works from May 15th to May 17th, 2015.
Born in 1963 in Pretoria, South Africa, Barker is known for his textural, mixed-media canvasses. His experiences growing up amidst apartheid military activity in Pretoria is reflected in his artworks' incisive and astute social and political commentaries. Barker has exhibited at the Stellenbosch Modern And Contemporary Art Gallery (SMAC Gallery) in Cape Town, Polokwane Art Museum, in Polokwane, the Standard Bank Gallery in Johannesburg, and at the Fried Contemporary.
