Vidas Perfectas: Ned Sublette & Elio Villafranca
During the rehearsal period for the upcoming Spanish language version of composer Robert Ashley's groundbreaking "television opera" Perfect Lives (now Vidas Perfectas, directed by Alex Waterman, December 15-17, 2011 at the Irondale Center in Brooklyn), musician cast members Ned Sublette and Elio Villafranca visited David Weinstein in the Clocktower for a conversation on the history and process behind the piece. Singer Sublette and pianist Villafranca have strong ties to Cuba. Villafranca was born there, and Sublette has traveled and written extensively about the culture. With many musical examples from the original recordings, some Cuban jazz, and more!
