Umer Butt & Thomas Erben

Michael Rush talks with Lahore-based artist and gallerist Umer Butt, founder of Grey Noise, and New York gallerist Thomas Erben, founder of Thomas Erben Gallery, about emerging art from Pakistan. Butt has opened one of the only contemporary art galleries in Lahore, featuring art that is both politically charged and, he hopes, also universal. Erben is currently featuring several of Butt's artists at his Chelsea gallery. Do Pakistani artists fear reprisals from fundamentalists? What is the atmosphere for making art in a time when street bombs are becoming more common? Can there be art in such a politically charged situation that is not political? (34 minutes).
