Tsui Hark, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Born in 1950, China’s Tsui Hark has gained international standing as a producer (A Better Tomorrow and The Killer, two iconic classics of Hong Kong cinema) and as an intensely personal martial arts action director (Seven Swords). Hark’s Detective Dee is a lush, nearly hallucinogenic if fact-inspired period epic lead by a Chinese detective whose exploits rival the centuries-later Sherlock Holmes.
