Steven Englander, ABC No Rio

Host Will Corwin sits down with Steven Englander, the director or "coaxer-in-general" of the Lower East Side's ABC No Rio, a gallery, cultural institution, community center, and a crossroads for art and activism. Englander retells the group's history, from its beginnings as a protest art action on New Year's Eve, 1979, organized by artist Kiki Smith and Alan Moore, among others, at an abandoned building on Delancey Street, to its cozy relationship with Joseph Beuys, to its current incarnation on Rivington. ABC No Rio is about to be transformed once again, and Englander addresses the issue of constructing a new building for an organization that has banked its reputation on squatting and non-conformity. He's pretty convincing (37 minutes).
