Stanford White: Murder, Love & Insanity in the Gilded Age

This staged radio play about the final days and adventures of Stanford White was written and produced by Peter McCabe and streamcast from the Clocktower Gallery on October 6 and 7, 2011. This is the recording of that event. The play was performed before a studio audience with actors, decor, music, and effects. The final product is a radio play honoring the great tradition of the radio broadcasts of the 30s and 40s.

Stanford White was the leading architect and celebrity of his day. His firm, McKim, Meade, & White designed the building we operate out of on Leonard Street in lower Manhattan. We occupy one of his towers. Staging this event here was a magical and mysterious gift to the space. White was murdered in 1906 in public on the rooftop garden of his Madison Square Garden (since demolished) by the husband of his lover, Evelyn Nesbit. The tangled and torrid tale is beautifully deconstructed here. The reverberations of the voices you hear are those of White's tower.
