Spaced Out: Psychedelics

A panel discussion moderated by Hamilton Morris and Nese Devenot, with artists Deborah Kass, Chris Martin, Ken Johnson, Bruce Pearson, and Fred Tomaselli that took place November 22, 2014 as part of the public programs series curated and produced by The Brooklyn Rail introduced by Phong Bui at Red Bull Studios New York.

The accompanying exhibiton, Spaced Out: Migration to the Interior, curated by Phong Bui at Red Bull Studios New York, ran October 10 – December 14, 2014. The show was a collective and playful exploration of psychedelic consciousness in contemporary art that crosses the boundary between the dream-world and reality. This exhibition featured artists, born between the 1930s and 1980s, who have common interests in psychedelic experience, disordered time perception, consensus trance induction, turn on-tune in-drop out, temporal illusion, altered states of awareness, and novelty theory. Utilizing the psychedelic as a viable space of artistic creation—heightened uses of color, exuberant patterns, distorted forms, fantastical imagery in repetition or randomness, and a highly idiosyncratic visual language—the works seek to challenge our perception.
