Shezad Dawood

Kristian Nammack hosts artist Shezad Dawood during the run of his exhibition It was a time that was a time, on view at Pioneer Works from September 11 - November 1, 2015. The conversation touches on the conception of the exhibition's titular film, Dawood's roots in British, Pakistani, and Indian traditions, the archetype of the black sun, and soundtrack collaborations in his films. Through an expansive presentation of new and recent works—collaborative film experiments, textile panels and neon wall pieces—It was a time that was a time explores speculative futures and questions traditional notions of history and ritual, image and icon, time and space.

Born in London, Dawood works across film, painting and sculpture to juxtapose discrete systems of image, language, site and historical narrative. His practice often involves collaboration, working with groups and individuals from differing territories to physically and conceptually map far-reaching lines of enquiry. His paintings and sculptures interplay with his film work as liminal extensions of his interrogation of perception, the politics of place, and structures of belief.
