Rufus Norris, London Road

The artistic director of London’s subsidized Royal National Theatre Rufus Norris is creating an ingenious film rendition of his stage hit London Road. The theatre production premiered in the smallest of the National theaters but soon was elevated to the largest stage, the Olivier. London Road tells the story of the denizens of Ipswich, a London suburb, whose lives are disrupted by the murders of five prostitutes at the hands of a serial killer. With lyrics based on interviews and TV broadcasts, it embodies the seriousness of Sondheim's work while maintaining its own unique character. In this interview, Norris discusses his filmmaking methods as well as the future of the National’s live theatrical presentations which recently included Broadway for the first time with the broadcast of James Franco’s hit revival of Of Mice and Men.
