Rare Groovin'
Jeannie Hopper researched and compiled this playlist in a quest to illustrate the jazz and pop culture of the 70s that converged in Herbie Hancock and his creation of the classic album, Headhunters. The album was controversial--for its break with jazz orthodoxy--and popular--in spite of its jazz-forward, edgey ensemble playing and improvised solos.
This program includes tracks by Cannonball Adderley with Rick Holms & Nat Adderley Sextet, Weather Report, Horace Silver, Deodato, Alphonze Mouzon, James Brown with Louie Belson Orchestra, Stevie Wonder, Rhythm Root All Stars with Raheem Da Vaughn, and Herbie Hancock.
Hopper presented the program in full as part of Classic Album Sundays, now a global listening initiative and the love child of Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy. The programs are distinguished for their all-vinyl, high-fidelity, uninterrupted listening experience. In New York these events take place at The Panther Room at Output, 74 Wythe Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
