Pat Steir, Self-Portrait
Will Corwin sits down to chat with painter Pat Steir, whose iconic crossed-out and waterfall paintings are to be seen in museums around the world. They focus on wall drawings and Steir's ongoing project Self-Portrait which started in 1987 at the New Museum and has had many, many incarnations, including a version at the Studio School in 2009, curated by David Cohen. Pat tells the story of Self-Portrait and of her site specific piece Another Nearly Endless Line at the Whitney Museum in 2010 and A Nearly Endless Line #3 at Thomas Schulte in Berlin. There is a transcendental episode in Berlin involving a cherry picker (an absolute must for all site-specific wall-drawings).
You can hear more from Pat Steir in her 2011 interview with Phong Bui for his Off The Rail session here that was transcribed and published in The Brooklyn Rail.
