New York Art Book Fair 2015, Part 2

This year, Printed Matter presented the tenth annual New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1 in Queens. This book fair is the world’s premier event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines, and this year it featured over 370 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, institutions and independent publishers from twenty-eight countries. In this second part in a two-part NYABF series for Paper Cuts, Christopher Kardambikis and Paper Cuts correspondents Arno Mokros and Taylor Yates invite some of the diverse collection of exhibitors and publishers to read their work.

-Aspiring art historian Arno Mokros, is an individual invested in the personal as political. He creates zines exploring queerness, art, and how histories are written. He graduated from Smith College in 2013, and currently lives in Brooklyn.

-Taylor Yates, editor-in-chief and founder of Selfish, a project that arose from a pressing desire to explore what our world would be like if women were encouraged to be just that--selfish. What is the validity of this stigma -- shouldn't women encourage each other to express themselves for their own sake?

-Sarah Gottesdiener of Modern Women, a design, art, and multiples project of LA artist. She creates books, zines, prints, paintings, wearables, and collaborations that are feminist and queer in nature.

-Nicole Killian, an artist born the year the first cd player was sold in Japan who investigates how the structures of the Internet, mobile messaging, and shared online platforms affect contemporary interaction and shape cultural identity from a queer, feminist perspective. Nicole is an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, studying and making work around "girls that run in packs."

-Jennifer Calandra, who makes Gender Queer erotic art with a focus on illustration, zine making, mask making, and sculpture.

-La Chamba Press, an independent publishing collective based in Brooklyn, NY and Los Angeles, CA. A creative family of different diasporas from Latin America to the Caribbean working in a variety of mediums, bringing forth their unique voices and cultural perspectives through original work. Together they share illustrations, designs, poetry, photography, music and more.

-Eloisa Aquino of B&D Press, an award-winning publisher that produces art zines and literary zines on queer topics, such as the series The Life and Times of Butch Dykes.

-A collaborating book-shop project, UP! Pop Up Shop is organized by students for students at the University of Art and Design in Offenbach, Germany. They collect printed matter from all groups of people which is kept in a small storage space at the university. If there is a special occasion, the room is unpacked and UP! comes to life. It is a non-profit market for printed matter, an action space and simply a place to share ideas.

-Christopher Schulz of Pinups, a queer zine, each issue of which features a pictorial of a nude male subject. The zine can be dismembered, and the loose pages tiled to reveal a single, monumental image of the subject. The zine's two states conflict, resulting in visual and narrative abstraction: a dialogue between its physical structure and its printed content.
