New York Art Book Fair 2015, Part 1

This year, Printed Matter presented the tenth annual New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1 in Queens. This book fair is the world’s premier event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines, and this year it featured over 370 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, institutions and independent publishers from twenty-eight countries. In this edition of Paper Cuts, Christopher Kardambikis and Paper Cuts Correspondents Arno Mokros and Taylor Yates invite some of the diverse collection of exhibitors and publishers to read their work.

-Julia Arredondo of Vice Versa Press, an independently run printing and publishing entity specializing in zines, show flyers, fine art prints and paper goods.

-Taylor Yates, editor-in-chief and founder of Selfish, a project that arose from a pressing desire to explore what our world would be like if women were encouraged to be just that--selfish. What is the validity of this stigma -- shouldn't women encourage each other to express themselves for their own sake?

-Aspiring art historian Arno Mokros is an individual invested in the personal as well as the political. He creates zines exploring queerness, art, and how histories are written. He graduated from Smith College in 2013, and currently lives in Brooklyn.

-Fuse Works, an organization that exhibits, publishes and promotes books, multiples and editions. The emphasis is on works that demonstrate a critical approach to the multiple as a distinct conceptual medium.

-Alicia's Klassic Kool Shoppe is a Toronto based one-woman operation consisting of collage, screenprinted wallpaper and installation, fine art prints, bookworks, posters and a growing collection of found oddities. She also works collaboratively with Eunice Luk, of Slow Editions.

-Paul Shortt and Matt Gualco of Frenemies, in Frenemies III: the two artists compete again to see who can sell more products during the fair. Gualco’s works include James Franco in the Middle, No Regrets and more. Shortt will be launching a new series of works under the moniker Shortt Editions.

-Pink Mince, “For the confirmed bachelor of exceptional taste”.

-Panayotis Terzis of Mega Press, an organization that publishes and promotes the works of artists who directly engage with the spirit of the 21st century while keeping one foot in the landfill of the recent and ancient past.

-Delema, born out of the necessity to publish one singular book: Paper Rad's PPP -The Zines of Paper Rad. If the books are sold and our losses are minimal we shall continue to publish in the near future.

RADIO SERIES

Paper Cuts is an exploration of the contemporary world of zines and DIY publishing. Hosted by Christopher Kardambikis, each program features writers, performers, and artists who have shared their work in print, on paper, and in small editions. Zines are truly dynamic publications that have built and supported engaged communities around ideals, experiences, genres, music, politics, poetry…anything that can be printed, shared, and/or mailed. The series will act as a cross section of this varied landscape and rich history. Listen to voices that would normally live in your hands and demand your eyeballs.
