Mark Zupan, Murderball

Mark Zupan has been hailed as 2005's most unlikely action hero and, for once, that's not hype. After all, the blond, tattooed, ferocious star player of the U.S. Paralympics rugby team, who is front and center in Murderball, is confined to a wheelchair. What this amazing documentary makes clear is that Zupan, his teammates and their opponents can be as ferocious and as dazzling as Mad Max on the court in their souped-up, specially constructed chairs. Or off. Zupan, captain last year for the team, was paralyzed in a 1993 Florida accident where he was thrown from the back of a buddy's pickup and dangled in a canal for nearly 15 hours before he was found, submerged up to his mouth and eyes. 30 at the time of this recording and an engineer in Austin, Texas, his story is only part of what makes Murderball so riveting.
