Lord Colin Renfrew
While hustling for interviews in the UK, Will Corwin finds himself at a Cambridge lecture on the southeastern Turkey religious site known as Gobekli Tepe (featured in the Dec. 9, 2011 New Yorker magazine article, The Sanctuary), given by Lord Colin Renfrew, Britain's Godfather of archaeology. Will sits down in Lord Renfrew's study to discuss "The World's Oldest Temple," and to get some answers on why we make art, from someone who has seen and discovered art at it's very beginnings. Renfrew is understandable cagey about making any broad generalizations, but he gives some wonderful insights into sculpture, think Pygmalion. He also discuses his favorite contemporary artists, like Richard Long, and his book, Figuring it Out: The Parallel Visions of Artists and Archeologists.
