Leah Coloff, This Tree
A conversation between Pete McCabe and HERE Arts 2016 artist-in-residence Leah Coloff, who is developing a new piece entitled This Tree (debuting March 8-9, 2016 at HERE), a multi-media ensemble performance ritual anchored in songs written by the cellist/singer/composer that explores family and remembrance. The project is amplified by the personal stories of four generations of women where pioneer spirit meets immigrant dreams in the Pacific Northwest, and constructed from Super 8 home movie footage, handmade objects, and personal talismanic props.
Leah Coloff is a cellist and singer/songwriter. Raised in the Pacific Northwest, her classical roots collide with 70’s rock creating songs and arrangements that are honest, sensual, funny, brutal, pissed-off, beautiful and chilly sweet. She has a band, Lucibel Crater, she was instrumental in the creation of (Gr)albums, a multi media app for ipad/iphone combining music with art, graphics, moving images and storytelling, and is cellist and vocalist with Scorchio, an electro-acoustic string quartet, resident string quartet for the Tibet House Benefit Concert produced by Philip Glass since 2001. Coloff holds a BM in cello performance from The San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
