Kwynn Johnson, Barrack Yard

Kwynn Johnson, on her 2015 Ghetto Biennale drawing project Barrack Yard, the parallels between the Haitian Lakou and other Caribbean arts collectives, and the slow process of drawing.

Barrack Yard was conceived of over a span of five years during Johnson's work in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel. The project visually documents the ways in which the Lakou at the Grand Rue (and reciprocal communities in Croix de Bouquet) continue to offer a critical space for creative work. Through a series of drawings created on-location, exploring the daily functions and features of the Lakou, Johnson created a recorded archive of the creative processes that go on amid the poetics of daily living.

Kwynn Johnson is a contemporary artist living and working in Trinidad and Haiti. She is a Haitian Studies and Cultural Studies Scholar.
