Karl Markovics and Stefan Ruzowitzky, The Counterfeiters
Winner of the 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Austria's The Counterfeiters is a fact-based concentration camp drama about the Nazis' attempt to destroy the American and English economies at the end of WWII by flooding their countries with counterfeit bills. The Nazis recruited concentration camp detainees, set them up in a special ward, fed them, dressed them and made the slave laborers feel semi-normal, certainly blessed from the horrors they were living. Karl Markovics who plays Salomon Sorowitsch, the chief counterfeiter, and writer-director Stefan Ruzowitzky explain why as non-Jews they feel this is a moral tale, not a Holocaust drama, and how with the help of one of the two living survivors of the section they told the truth.
