Johnny Ma, OId Stone
Born in China, raised in Vancouver, Johnny Ma returned to China to make the bleakly mesmerizing “Old Stone” which indicts the nation’s health insurance policies and a system that makes it preferable to let an accident victim die on the street rather than be a Good Samaritan. For that is the issue here as a taxi driver helps the cyclist he hit and then sees his life, family, income – everything he holds dear – go poof! Ma’s candid assessment of cinematic censorship adds another layer to this tale.
