Jen Lyon, MeanRed Productions
AIR's Jeannie Hopper chats with Jen Lyon, co-founder with Katie Longmyer of MeanRed Productions. Lyon tells of the various triumphs and setbacks that led to the foundation of MeanRed and related ventures Good Peoples and BKLYN Yard--from traveling to New York all the way from the West Coast to earning a Masters in Social Work, from doing bottle-service for Baldwin brothers to managing at Joe's Pub. Along with discussions of the various neighborhoods in which she has worked--among them the pre-East Williamsburg Bushwick and the newly-Superfunded Gowanus Canal--she discusses the influence of Suzanne Fiol, founder of ISSUE Project Room, on how she approaches the creation of any artistic, social and dynamic space, as well as what she is currently up to with BKLYN Yard. She also offers some titillating hints at some of the plans these groups have planned for the upcoming summer and imparts much of the invaluable knowledge that she's picked up over the jobs and years--so take note, all you social organizers, club managers, bookers and directors (35 minutes).
