Javier Fuentes-León, Undertow
Peru’s entry in the Academy Awards’ 2010 Foreign Language Film category, Undertow features Christian Mercado, one of the country’s biggest stars, as a conflicted fisherman, married man and father living in a tiny community when his lover dies at sea. According to local custom, if he attends the funeral, his secret world as the dead man’s lover will be exposed. Peruvian-born writer/director Javier Fuentes-León is based in Los Angeles where he writes, directs, and edits various television projects. This gorgeously shot and scored ghost story marks his feature film debut. (20 minutes)
