I'd Rather Be Sloppy Drunk Than Any Way That I Know

Collector and historian Nathan Salsburg assembled this playlist of delicious drunken rants for us in 2005. A selectioin of rare songs about the pleasure and travails of drinking. Featuring a conversation between a man and his marabout, concerning the ill-effects of the man's enjoyment of drink.

With Sonny Boy Williamson, Lightnin' Hopkins, Merle Haggard, Jimmy Martin, Blind Teddy Darby, Wilmot MacDonald, Big Bill Broonzy, Jali Musa Jawara (Djeli Moussa Diawara) with features a conversation between a man and his marabout, concerning the ill-effects of the man's enjoyment of drink. The marabout tells the man that "any liquid which does not come from the water well is not a serious drink," and goes on to catalog the evils of beer ("it kills"), whiskey (which "ruins your character"), champagne, palm wine, marijuana, and pills. The jacket notes then either quote the marabout or arrive at their own conclusion, saying that "a man with a destiny should not destroy his future with drugs." -- NS
