Ian Campbell, In Search of the Miraculous
From her dark-yet-sun-drenched garage in Los Angeles, Becca Lieb interviews Vermont-based artist and musician Ian Campbell over the telephone. In early June of 2009, upon graduating from Yale’s Scupture MFA program, Campbell and sculptor Boris Chesakov embarked on a cross country walk from New Haven to Los Angeles. Lieb and Campbell discuss this epic walk and reflect on its relationship to Bas Jan Ader’s work, in particular his final piece In Search of the Miraculous.
This interview is produced in conjunction with the forthcoming publication of Nonsensical Magazine, which includes Lieb’s essay "Safe Fun / What Does It Mean?", a reflection on Ader’s work and a string of fatal accidents that occurred at Rye Playland Amusement Park in the mid-2000s.
