Federico García Lorca: Poet in New York

ARTonAIR.org and the Clocktower Gallery are the official radio partner with the Federico García Lorca Foundation, with the support of Acción Cultural Española, as they mount their months-long festival celebrating the Spanish artist and poet. Centering around Lorca’s year spent in and around New York in 1929-30 following his traumatic split with Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel, the festival includes a new translation and edition of his book Poet In New York, an exhibition*, readings, theatre, puppet plays, panel discussions, lectures, music and performances in over a dozen venues and institutions around New York from April 5 to July 21, 2013. ARTonAIR.org will record and archive the events online in our Radio Lorca section. For complete festival details visit LorcaNYC.com.

This program is a discussion and overview of both Lorca's life and work and the festival program with historian and translator Charles Ruas, poet and translator Mónica de la Torre, and Lorca niece and Lorca Foundation director, Laura García Lorca. On demand listeners can jump to any of five segments withiin the one-hour program:

Part 1: Early life and relationship with Salvadore Dalí and Luis Buñuel
Part 2: The story behind Poet in New York and Lorca's time in New York 1929-30
Part 3: Translation, theater, sexual identity, assassination, and other Lorca issues
Part 4: A conversation with jazz pianist, composer, and Lorca expert Ben Sidran
Part 5: The hosts discuss the events of the festival and pick some favorites

* The exhibition at the New York Public Library (5 April - 21 July, 2013) contains the original, long lost manuscript, photos, drawings, and related artifacts and ephemera from the 1929-30 visit.
