Dore Ashton

Even Will admits that he got a bit star struck during this one--he couldn't help asking esteemed art critic Dore Ashton what Mark Rothko was like in person! Anyway, this is a pretty amazing on site-interview: Corwin and Ashton sat at the kitchen table in the late-afternoon gloom talking Picasso, Leger, Duchamp and Ab Ex, drinking red wine. How many conversations end with, "Would you like to see my Guston?" Dore tells her life story and doesn't spare anybody's feelings. The whole thing comes full circle when she talks about interviewing Duchamp in his apartment, which is where Will interviewed Martha Clarke (available here), and now Will is interviewing Dore about interviewing Marcel in the same place--Whew! (37 minutes).
