Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Mustang
With an emotionally triumphant Cannes premiere, France's Oscar nomination for best foreign language film, and critical praise coming from every direction, Deniz Gamze Ergüven's debut feature Mustang has made the Turkish born, Paris based writer-director into the proverbial overnight success. Mustang is a semi-autobiographical, fairy-tale of sorts about five Turkish sisters, orphans raised by their conservative grandmother, who are each being married off as they pass into their teenage years. Like the wild horses out West who will not be tamed, Mustang chronicles feminist awakening and rebellion.
