Camilla Cormanni, Anna Magnani Retrospective
Italy’s indelible and iconic Anna Magnani (1908-1973) is the subject of a superlative 24-film retrospective organized by Italy’s Minister of Culture and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, screened from May 18 – June 1 on 35mm and 16mm.
From Rome, the retrospective’s organizer Camilla Cormanni of Istituto Luce Cinecittà speaks candidly about the Magnani films, including her Oscar winning Hollywood period, her global breakthrough in Rome: Open City and her relatively forgotten early work as a comedienne and singer. Magnani, we learn, was a great artist whose monumental achievements could never offset a perpetual unhappiness.
