ANNIVERSARIES
Hosts Christopher Kardambikis and Tayor Yates celebrate the one-year anniversary of Paper Cuts at Second Sundays at Pioneer Works, a monthly series of open studios, live music, and site-specific interventions at the Red Hook art space, along with Paul Moreno, MacKenzie Peck, Eno Edet, Sadie Barnette, and Jake Nussbaum --all participants in previous shows from throughout the year!
Paul Moreno was born in Sparks, NV, studied Literature at University of San Francisco and then moved to New York to attend the Gallatin School of Independent Study at NYU. After an early departure from a program in Critical Thought, Paul pursued careers as a gallerina, a homemaker, and most recently, a set and prop stylist. Throughout these careers, Paul, a self taught visual artist, has been making drawings, paintings, and zines that deal with sexual positions, tropes of masculinity, and notions of beauty. Paul, in collaboration with Charlie Welch, is the creator of KNOWSGAY, a zine that takes an artistic approach to gay iconography. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.
When someone is introduced to MacKenzie Peck, the Editor-in-Chief of the print porn publication Math Magazine, they are surprised. She doesn’t look the part. Which makes you wonder, what should a pornographer look like? And for that matter, what should pornography look like? The common and cliché answers to these questions are what MacKenzie is working to change. MacKenzie produces Math Magazine to illustrate that all bodies have the right to feel sexy and beautiful. She, with the help of a small team, is working to define the female gaze, the gay gaze, the bi gaze, the differently abled gaze -- all the gazes (#AllTheGazes) uncommon to print.
Raised and nurtured by New York’s underground, Eno Edet has taken the lessons and teachings of the city’s most sacred weirdos, and has translated them into his own brand of children stories. These stories are written with the intent to spread love, happiness and imagination throughout the world. But in a very strange way.
Sadie Barnette is from Oakland, California. She received her BFA from CalArts in 2006,and her Masters in Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego, in 2012. Barnette was a 2014-15 Artist-in-Residence at Studio Museum in Harlem. She has shown her work in venues including The Mistake Room, Self Help Graphics, Charlie James, and Papillion in Los Angeles, Ever Gold Gallery in San Francisco, Studio Museum in Harlem, and Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Jake Nussbaum is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and radio producer based in Brooklyn. His recent public projects include Field Guide, a solo exhibition of costumes and maps; Ecstatic Ensemble, a feature article for INTERCOURSE Magazine; and Just the Facts and Pass the Bucket, a music radio show for WJSC-FM. In 2013 he was a Staff Artist at the Vermont Studio Center. He holds a degree in anthropology from Wesleyan University.
Taylor Yates is the founder and editor-in-chief of Selfish. When she is not busy reconstructing the universal narrative to unearth and reflect its intrinsic ties to the female perspective, she is exploring the imprints of the psychological landscape through a keyboard, a bass, and her space mouse alter ego.
Christopher Kardambikis seeks an absurd mythology for the future through drawings, paintings, and books. Recently, he completed two years of his Book-a-Month project playing with the book form while experimenting with materials, process, and space. He has co-founded three artist book and zine projects: Encyclopedia Destructica in Pittsburgh, Gravity and Trajectory in San Diego, and 90 Proof Press in Los Angeles. Christopher has been an artist-in-residence at The Art Students League, Vermont Studio Center, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Millay Colony, Pioneer Works, and the Pittsburgh Center of the Arts. He received his BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and MFA from the University of California, San Diego. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.
