Anna Sebastian

British artist Anna Sebastian discusses her charcoal drawing series, having her "studio" at the Oloffson hotel, and the legacy of cultural appropriation in fine art. Recorded in the Radyo Shak for the 2015 Ghetto Biennale.

Sebastian's project for the biennale, titled Heterotopia, explored Haitian Vodou practice as an amalgamation of culture and religion, in response to significant and unforgivable displacement. The project retells the history of the Haitian Vodou religion through a series of drawing and text, that contrast the western perception of Haitian Vodouism which, throughout its documentation, has been both demonized and exoticized.
