Amy Berg, West of Memphis
Oscar nominated documentarian Amy Berg was enticed by none other than New Zealand’s Peter Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh to take a look at the notorious miscarriage of justice involving the “West Memphis Three” and the 1984 child murders at Robin Hood Hills which has already been the subject of a documentary trilogy. The case has attracted the support of, among others, Johnny Depp, Henry Rollins, Eddie Vedder, Patti Smith and Dixie Chick Natalie Maines.
Berg's film follows the three along with legal teams, activists, family and friends as they work to prove bungling and mismangement by authorities. Imprisoned for 18 years and now released, Jessie Misskelley, Jason Baldwin, and Damien Echols (the latter produced the film with Peter Jackson and their partners) displayed a remarkable Zen-like maturity specially in the face of torrential public assault on their characters.
