Alex Anwandter, You’ll Never Be Alone & Qin Hao, Crosscurrent
This episode features two extraordinary interviews held during the 66th annual Berlin International Film Festival (11-21 February 2016). American actress Meryl Streep was the President of the Jury.
Alex Anwandter, an internationally recognized Chilean singer/musician, shares thoughts on You’ll Never Be Alone, his debut film which competed for the Teddy Award at the festival. The film explores sexuality, LGBT identity, and drag in Santiago. Moved by the 2012 murder of Daniel Zamudio, an androgynous gay teenager who was brutally beaten to death by neo-nazis, Anwandter unpacks the complexity of hate-crimes and sexuality in Chile.
Qin Hao, a leading actor in China’s art cinema scene featured in nine major pictures and at festival entries in Cannes and Venice, attended this year's festival for his work in Crosscurrent, Yang Yao's magnificently shot film celebrating the Yangtze River in China. Hao shares his thought on the film, his role as the boat captain, and the river's long-standing role in Chinese culture, history, and people. Crosscurrent The jury at the Berlin festival awarded Crosscurrent with a cinematography prize.
