MV Carbon, Beyond the Dimensional Slope
MV Carbon is a Brooklyn based interdisciplinary artist and composer who is recognized for her autonomous approach to music and performance. She uses magnetic tape, sculptural sound objects, field recordings, hand-built circuitry, projection, and reactive mediums in her performances and installations. Experiential situations are a significant component to her work as she embraces the immediacy of the situation at hand. Concepts are developed based on the environment and situation in which they will occur. The deviation of space is assessed and used as a source for the work. Participant’s actions affect the outcome of the pieces though reactive mediums, sound recordings, and physical interaction.
Streamcast, Concert & Open Studios: Weekend
Tuesday, July 23 at The Clocktower Gallery (or via live streacast) hear San Francisco lo-fi trio Weekend perform live while we simultaneously celebrate the release of Jinx, their second album out July 23, 2013. The same night visitors will have the opportunity to explore the full extent of the project rooms of the gallery, showcasing works from artists MV Carbon and Borden Capalino alongside our current exhibition Jene Highstein: Early Works in the main and upper galleries.
Formed in San Franscico in 2009, immersive post-punk band Weekend consists of Kevin Johnson, Abe Pedroza, and Shaun Durkan, former middle-school bandmates and roommates currently dedicated to balancing the aggression of punk with a more textural, cerebral experience. Their new album Jinx follows the success of their haunting 2010 debut album Sports and similarly celebrated follow up EP Red in 2011.

more Tetraphonics: Lea Bertucci's Quadraphonic Cello
A live concert recording of Lea Bertucci’s Quadraphonic Cello, an instrument outfitted with a customized pickup designed specially for 4-channel sound. Noise rather than pitch dominates the aesthetic approach, with texture and timbre in the foreground. Interdisciplinary artist and avant-garde cellist MV Carbon performs the composition by Bertucci, with programming by Tommy Martinez.
This performance was part of the Clocktower's March 2016 Tetraphonics event presented in collaboration with Lea Bertucci at Pioneer Works where four artists explored quadraphonic sound and its mesmeric effects in performance alongside 4-channel video work.
An instrument, multichannel installation, and platform for audio-visual composition, the Quadraphonic Cello re-imagines a classical cello as a vehicle for surround sound. A customized pickup using piezo-electric component technology is attached directly to each of the four strings. When the cellist bows, plucks or taps, four discrete signals are produced and routed to a quadraphonic array of speakers. Developed through the Harvestworks New Works Fellowship, this instrument is a three dimensional musical apparatus tailored to multi-channel composition and the sculpting of acoustic space.
