DJ Shakey's Audio Control Adventure

Artist, producer, DJ, and audio explorer Julie Covello aka DJ Shakey set up a workshop laboratory in our recording studio to invite innovators, students and creative souls from the electronic music scene to share and innovate together. The launching point for these ongoing sessions, concerts, workshops, and roundtables is her longtime fascination with alternative methods of control for audio gear in live performance. The residency culminated in a major Warper Party event at the Clocktower on January 12, 2012.

Warper Party: Honeychild Coleman Set

On January 12, 2012 DJ Shakey hosted a multi-room, multi-media performance gala at the Clocktower Gallery as part of her production and project residency here for ARTonAIR.org. Over 24 artists occupied 8 spaces for 3-plus hours illuminating the theme of alternative controllers for electronic instruments both audio and video. One of the participating artists was Kentucky-born Mezzo-soprano avant-genre artist Carolyn “Honeychild" Coleman, once described as "Fugazi meets Echobelly" and as "evoking images of Kate Bush and Sarah Vaughn battling it out in a mosh pit.” In 2010 Coleman was recruited by Ari Up (R.I.P.) to join The Slits as sole guitarist on their final European/UK Tour and was a featured artist in documentaries including Afropunk by James Spooner and Fireflies and Getting My Name Up There by Katharina Cibulka.
