#trashDAY: That 90's Though Blockparty 4-5PM
The last decade of the last millennium brought Hip Hop and R&B to the mainstream, along with Kente cloth hats, Cross Colors, cardio vascular exercise disguised as social dance, fish eye lenses to music videos and, of course, Jerome-In-The-House. Black people were totally in style and cell phones didn't have cameras. Join Queen Naila and Doenie Love, along with guest DJ and multidisciplinary artist Derrick Adams, for a cornucopia of jiggyfied jamz. They'll be wearing 90's gear and instigating trash talk. Listen in for a #trashDAY celebration of this era with much, much trash talk. As in lots.
I Love Vinyl 5-6PM
I Love Vinyl was founded in the summer of 2009 by six seasoned DJs hailing from NYC, Chicago, Baltimore, and beyond. With over 100 years of spinning, and over 100,000 records between them, the I Love Vinyl all-stars include DJ Scribe, Amir Abdullah, Jon Oliver, OP!, and Shawn Dub. The organic history of this vinyl loving crew revolves around their fabulous grassroots parties and their innovations in radio using Mixcloud in a terrestrial-influenced, free-form style. For their shows, which have spread from Brooklyn to Amsterdam, they invite taste-makers including seasoned DJ's, crate diggers, musicians, and artists who share a passion for spinning. They are champions of vinyl in the digital age.
BULLA EN EL BARRIO 6:30pm
Led by Barranquilla native Carolina Oliveros, the drummers and singers of Bulla en el Barrio explore new and classic Bailes Cantados of Bullerengue. Bullerengue originated on the Carribean Colombian coast of Colombia. The group, consisting mostly of drummers and female singers, has deep African roots and possesses a mesmerizing, trance-like quality.
SUPERMAMBO A Vibes Tribute to TITO PUENTE 8:00pm
Mambo King and timbalero extraordinaire Tito Puente was also an accomplished vibraphone player, an instrument that was prominently featured on his early mambo recordings. Grammy-nominated Felipe Fournier is a percussionist and vibes player from Costa Rica who plays with Ruben Blades and classic salsa outfit Our Latin Thing. He has assembled a group of musicians who have collectively played with some of the greatest Latin musicians--Eddie Palmieri, Willie Colon, and the late Tito Puente himself.
SECOND SUNDAYS is a monthly series of open studios, live music, and site-specific interventions presented by Pioneer Works the second Sunday of every month. The series showcases artists in residence along with musical performances and DJs, curated by Olivier Conan.
