Grafting the relentless repetitions of modern minimalism onto the propulsive engine of rock and roll, Horse Lords create an ecstatic forward thrust driven by dueling polyrhythms that curve endlessly past one another. The Baltimore quartet, consisting of saxophonist/percussionist Andrew Bernstein, bassist/synthesist Max Eilbacher, guitarist Owen Gardner, and drummer Sam Haberman, employs arcane tuning systems to achieve their otherworldly harmonies, made possible by guitars refretted by Gardner. The resulting sound is at once stark and lush, tightly interwoven and threatening to fly apart, making their live performances spellbinding and utterly thrilling affairs. Their April 2016 record Interventions on Northern Spy Records showcases this visceral approach to live performance, as well as their interest in crafting studio compositions that pull apart and reassemble the constituent parts of their music into more abstract forms. Their 2014 record, Hidden Cities (NNA), was named one of the best of 2014 by the Washington Post, Adhoc.fm, and New Yorker critic Sasha Frere-Jones.

Experimental musician Bob Bellerue exhibits an unhinged noisy soundscape in a one hour set performed live and broadcasted as part of the Playing Hooky radio event series. Noise composer, experimental musician, and creative technician based in Brooklyn NY, Bellerue has been involved in a wide range of creative activities for over 25 years – experimental electronic music, junk metal percussion ensembles, Balinese gamelan, sound scores for dance/theater/video/performance art, and installation sound and video art. His recent sound work is focused on resonant feedback systems, amplified instruments objects and spaces, electronics, and Supercollider programming. He was formerly based in Los Angeles, where he ran the sub-garde experimental music/performance space the Il Corral, and curated the Beyond Music series and festival. He is an audio engineer and event producer, working presently for Issue Project Room and a dozen or so regular clients in the NYC area.

Expansive sound and polyrhythmic structures pervade the Wume duo's one hour set performed live and broadcasted as part of the Playing Hooky radio event series. Streamed on clocktower.org straight from a shipping container/recording studio in the idyllic garden at Pioneer Works. Tune in at 4PM to hear Wume live. Wume is April Camlin and Albert Schatz. They live and work in the fair land of Baltimore, Maryland after spending their formative years in Chicago. Their music explores polyrhythmic structures through the lens of kosmische and is in a constant state of evolution and self-reflection. The pair began the collaboration as a development of Camlin's drumming and Schatz’s interest in keyboards and synthesis. It became an exercise in pushing their abilities and conjuring vibes. Wume make[s] the complex, the layered, the expansive, the sunnily songlike out of two instruments, on and off, zero and one. That deft synthesis is what makes Wume stand out from the crowd of motorik-driven synth fans these days (CityPaper).
