Moral Kombat: C Spencer Yeh vs. G Lucas Crane

This show comes from an installment of Moral Kombat, the Clocktower Gallery performance series that calculates musicians and sound artists' morality quotient as evidenced by their performance. On this March 2011 session, violin soloist, improviser, drone composer, and vocal adventurer C Spencer Yeh faces off against tape collage-ist G Lucas Crane in perhaps the most ethically fraught Moral Kombat in our archives. For this recording from the performance, our radio team experimented with a four-channel system, employing four mics that mix sounds from both the board and the room. Known for his ability to incorporate the ephemeral and physical elements surrounding a work into his sound compositions, Yeh's performances are both sensual and expressive. He has performed and collaborated with an impressive list of artists and bands including The New Humans with Vito Acconci, Tony Conrad, Evan Parker, Thurston Moore, Paul Flaherty and Chris Corsano. The ferociously whimsical and brutally romantic gentle giant G Lucas Crane performs a live set incorporating the entire universe of sound in a ball of fire and bubbles. The Lucas-coaster is a ride we all must take whenever possible. Equipped with his lo-tech obsolete gadgets and mysterious processors, Lucas chews tape, punches buttons, and launches a delicious cacophony that will invade your heart. Impossible? Recorded at Outpost Artists Resources, the gallery and production center in Ridgewood, Queens on July 9, 2015 and presented as part of their Fire Over Heaven Music Series curated by Greg Fox.
