Judith Supine Reception with Ed Schrader's Music Beat

Brooklyn-based collage artist Judith Supine creates vibrant, dynamic and poignant collages using inexpensive art supplies and old printed material. At the Clocktower, Supine creates an environment for a music video with the band Ed Schrader's Music Beat, directed by Jay Buim. Judith Supine is a collage artist who produces work using an Exacto knife, a pair of scissors, glue sticks and cheap paints. Drawing primarily from old pornography magazines, newspapers and art books, Supine seeks out figural elements which he then rearranges to create unique collages. He concerns himself not only with arrangement, but also with scale; once a collage is completed, it is digitally enlarged and reprinted in greyscale. It is then taken back to the studio to be colorized using acrylic paints. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia and currently based in Brooklyn, Judith Supine had used art as his primary means of communication with the outside world. He has taken to salvaging printed material which he uses to create colorful, haphazard and poignant collages. In transforming photographs of nude models, celebrities and children into monstrosities, Supine brings attention to the class issues and twisted ideals that run rife in society.

Ed Schrader's Music Beat performed live at Judith Supine's Clocktower artist residency opening. The Baltimore based band has been together since 2009 and is comprised of drum, bass, vocals, and a lot of reverb. Ed Schrader provides strong beats and vocals, and Devlin Rice supplies the robust low end. This recording took place in the Clocktower November 4th, 2013. After the musical portion of this episode, Joe Ahearn talks with the band about how Ed Schrader's Music Beat came to be, and where it is now. Their interesting history and tours provide them with a lot to talk about. The three discuss touring for the last year and a half in the states and Europe, and their thirteen and a half hour filming day in the Clocktower.

Filmmaker Jay Buim shoots a macabre music video in the iconic Clocktower Gallery space, filmed in collaboration with collage artist Judith Supine and the band Ed Schrader's Music Beat. The music video follows the story of a world famous ballerina, who invites the three most significant men in her life to a secret performance at the Clocktower Gallery, which will be the last dance of her career. As the performance unfolds throughout the gallery space, the ballerina attempts to gruesomely murder all three of her guests. The entire video is shot to the song Signs by Ed Schrader's Music Beat and Judith Supine's Clocktower installation provides inspiration for the haunting visuals. Buim captures some of the last footage of the gallery's historic thirteenth floor location in Tribeca, including beautiful scenes of the main space, roof, and clock face, before the Clocktower's closing in November, 2013.
