Robot Radio: Noise in Your Eye, Jean Tinguely & Harry Bertoia

Historic and rare recordings of sculptures that make sound mechanically, kinetically, powered by man, and powered by nature. Featuring artists Jean Tinguely (1925-91), Harry Bertoia (1915-78), Horst Rickels (b. 1947) and Alan Lamb (b. 1944).

WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution


P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center presents WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution, the first comprehensive, historical exhibition to examine the international foundations and legacy of feminist art. 

The exhibition, curated by Connie Butler, spans the period of 1965 to 1980 and includes 120 artists and artist groups from the United States, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. WACK! includes work by women who operated within the political structure of feminism as well as women who did not necessarily embrace feminism as part of their practice, but were impacted by the movement. Comprising work in a broad range of media - including painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, and performance art -, the exhibition is organized around themes based on media, geography, formal concerns, collective aesthetic, and political impulses. 

This exhibition was displayed on the entire First and Second Floors and in the Third Floor Main Gallery of P.S.1 from February 17, 2008 through May 12, 2008.


Experimental Composers


The object of this series is to invite emerging and established innovators to share their work. These programs are usually a combination of an interview with a far-reaching perspective on the artist's career, some recordings illustrating this history, and something new. Open territory. The unfortunate and unintended messages that come attached to a title like Experimental Composers are many. Still it is one of the few labels to come out of the world of music that has not been co-opted by promoters, corporations, journalists, or lawyers. This one just seems to have anti-market goo on it. Hooray. It's also just bad English (as if to imply that these poor souls are themselves, in their flesh and blood, some kind of experiment and, perhaps, even expendable). And then there is the spectre of defying the wisdom of the great Edgar Varèse who said something like, "I do not write experimental music. My experimenting is done before I make the music. Afterwards it is the listener who must experiment."

Venice Biennale


A series of talk and musical programs assembled from our various trips to Venice for the Biennale dating back to 2005. The programs range from round table discussions to interviews to DJ sets to virtual pavilions rendered in music and sound. On two occasions (2005 and 2007) we broadcast live on Italian FM radio from a boat moored near the Giardini. In 2011 our roving reporters covered the scene while the interview booth was headquartered near Piazzo San Marco. We also partnered with artist Federico Diaz and his sculpture-building robots at the Arsenale to design a special series called Robot Radio. 2013 brought us together with LaRete Art Projects and the Venice Agendas series produced by workinprogress for interviews and discussions.
