Artist Haroon Mirza selected these tracks and wrote this about them: The playlist is a variety of tracks that somehow define for me a certain attitude towards music that shifts between pop and avant-garde. Some of the tracks are designed to be popular while others use established pop sounds to push more progressive ideas about composition, such as minimalism, arhythm and psychedelia.
With selections from Philip Glass, Forest Creature, Herb Albert, Django Django, ยต-ziq, Mark Fell, Kraftwerk, hrm199, Underworld, Phantom Band, others.
Haroon Mirza Live Streamcast from New York's Clocktower Gallery on ARTonAIR.org on Tuesday, 20 March, 2012 from 6 - 8 p.m. EDT New York (10 - 12 p.m. London, 3 - 5 p.m. Los Angeles).
Haroon Mirza will be broadcasting a performance featuring a new work created during his residency at the Clocktower Gallery (NYC) as part of The Island Studio Sessions. As in other projects, Mirza has assembled an eclectic inventory of objects including found furniture, kinetic circuits, electrical gadgets, and optical components. Listeners will hear a live performance for the rhythmically driven abstract sounds created by this sculptural configuration.
Mirza is a 2012 resident in one of the studio spaces at the Clocktower Gallery for two months creating a process-based work and series of events and broadcasts on the gallery's radio station, ARTonAIR.org. The residency is part of The Island Studio Sessions, an artist production project made possible by a collaboration between The Island (Andrew Bonacina and Victoria Brooks, curators, www.theislandarts.org) and the Clocktower Gallery (Alanna Heiss, curator).
Haroon Mirza (b. 1977, London) lives and works in London & Sheffield. Recent solo exhibitions include Spike Island, Bristol, UK (2012); Camden Arts Centre, London, UK; Lisson Gallery, London (both 2011). Recent group exhibitions include ILLUMInations, 54 Venice Biennale, Venice (2011); The British Art Show 7 (2010); The Sheffield Pavillion, 11th Istanbul Biennial (2009) and New Contemporaries, The A Foundation, Liverpool, London (2008). Mirza won the Silver Lion at 54th Venice Biennale (2011) and the 2010 Northern Art Prize.

Clocktower Exhibits & Events is home to an archive of interviews with artists, curators, musicians, organizers, and more who have participated in Clocktower exhibitions and events throughout our organization’s history.
Many of the below recordings were documented while Clocktower was in the midst of a transformation. The original name, The Clocktower Gallery, was given to the exhibition, residency, and performance space in TriBeCa, founded by alternative spaces movement pioneer Alanna Heiss in 1972. After 2001, the Clocktower Gallery re-inaugurated its exhibition programming in 2005 as part of MoMA/PS1 and, after 2008, under the auspices of Art International Radio. In 2013, we moved on from our downtown Manhattan location, and have since renamed the organization Clocktower Productions, a title which encompasses our radio, exhibition, and event programming.
For more Clocktower history, listen to The Clocktower Oral History Project, in which such figures as Vito Acconci, Bill Beirne, Colette, Jeffrey Deitch, Mary Heilmann, Jene Highstein, Ann Magnuson, Richard Nonas and Joel Shapiro reflect upon their experiences with this unique New York space. Organized by artist Nancy Hwang for the Fall 2009 AVANT-GUIDE TO NYC: Discovering Absence exhibition at apexart.
NB: Clocktower Radio was launched by MoMA/PS1 in 2004 as the Web's first art radio station. It has been independent since 2009 and is licensed to host content created under PS1 management. Programs produced prior to 2011 may refer to our earlier URLs and station IDs, including WPS1.org, artonair.org, and Art International Radio. For the complete history of Clocktower Radio, read our Mission & History section.
The Island radio series, produced and presented by curators Victoria Brooks and Andrew Bonacina, regularly presents on-site recordings of UK-based performance, music, panels and artist interviews.
The Island also partners with the Clocktower Gallery on The Island Studio Sessions, a long-term research project that includes a series of residencies, exhibitions and radio broadcasts. The first two residents as part of the project are UK-based artists Haroon Mirza and Hannah Sawtell. These residencies are made possible by a collaboration between The Island (Andrew Bonacina and Victoria Brooks, curators) and the Clocktower (Alanna Heiss, curator).
The Island is an itinerant non-profit organisation that develops curatorial projects in dialogue with international partners. The Island is committed to a collaborative model for working with organisations and artists across the globe to explore the critical potential of cultural exchange.
